Swimming cardio workouts are relatively short, you push out your strength for 20 to 30 minutes then slow it down after a set to facilitate an increase in burning fats and calories. The different strokes that can be performed while immersed in the water, become effective through the resistance with the water, and thus make it more like a workout rather than just a leisure activity. You can use the breast stroke, back stroke, butterfly, and crawls as they all offer a good muscle building exercise for many different areas of the body..
A good way to increase the effectiveness of swimming cardio is to gradually reduce rest periods when doing swimming sprints. You can swim a designated number of laps using any desired swimming stroke and have rest periods in between where you can drink water or pack on a light healthy snack. Gradually reduce rest periods from minutes to seconds to save more time and have a quality swimming cardio workout.
