If you use a muscle building program you will quickly realize that a starvation diet, regardless of what may be suggested elsewhere, is certainly not the best, or healthiest, way to lose weight in the shortest time possible.

There are a number of very good reasons why this is the case, and it won’t take too long for you to understand that a starvation diet is more harmful to your body than beneficial.

Regardless of the fact that some abs programs do a very good job of explaining why a starvation diet can not, and should not, be used when building muscle, starvation diets are generally a very bad way to lose weight and should be not be used.

3 Reasons Why This Drastic Style Of Dieting Is A Bad Idea!

1. Nutrient Deprivation Causes Lack of Energy:

The most important reason these diets should be avoided is nutrient deprivation. Your body requires certain levels of most nutrients just to carry out normal daily functions. Depriving your body of nutrients will eventually make these tasks impossible to carry out properly.

Everything your body does from blinking your eyes to growing your toenails to working on your six pack abs requires energy, the more energy your body expends the more energy your body requires, this is why your body needs a consistent supply of body fuels daily in the form of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. This replenishment of body fuels is even more important when building muscle because of the vast expenditure of energy required!

A starvation diet will seriously limit the amount of accessible energy your body can draw on therefore resulting in a constant feeling of weakness that will eventually become nausea, vomiting, headache, and other related symptoms, some of which can be serious, especially if your body is deprived of vital nutrients for a prolonged period of time.

2. Nutrient Deprivation Stops Muscle Growth:

As a knock on effect of seriously diminishing many vital nutrients, your muscle growth will effectively stop because protein, which is the most important nutrient for increasing muscle mass, is in short supply.

Muscles increase in size because they are constantly exercised. This constant working of the muscles causes something called micro trauma which is when the cells within the muscle tissue are broken. Damaged muscle cells are then repaired by the amino acids contained within protein. Without protein there are no amino acids, and without the amino acids there is no repair, no repair means no increase in muscle mass.

As well as protein, muscles require certain vitamins and minerals to sustain continuous and healthy growth such as vitamin D, phosphorus, and iron which can be found in certain fruits and vegetables again…none of these will be available to your muscles when there is a serious reduction in food intake!

3. Nutrient Deprivation Reduces Resistance to Infection

Your body uses nutrients to reinforce the body’s immune system, depriving your body of nutrients increases the risk of illness and infection. A lack of sufficient nutrients will result in your body’s defenses become weaker and with every day that you starve your body the chance of becoming sick increases.

Your stomach and gastrointestinal system are likely to be one of the first areas affected by nutrient deficiency and the chances of suffering from conditions such as stomach ulcers increases very quickly.

Imbalances within your body and in particular your digestive system would cause severe problems disrupting many of the body’s other processes. Body systems that could well be effected by a starvation diet include your endocrine and nervous system just to name two.
